The Zimbabwe government planned to re-open schools around mid-June after taking an early break end of March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a senior government official said.

The re-opening of schools will follow a few weeks after that of universities which are set to resume classes on June 1, according to local media reports.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Cain Mathema told The Sunday Mail that “schools will be opened three to four weeks from now.”

He said the government will hire some 6,000 teachers as part of a comprehensive plan for the safe and smooth opening of schools in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will bring the number of teachers to about 140,000 against the country’s 4.5 million learners. Enditem
