Zimbabwe’s monthly inflation maintained an upward trend in December, rising to 4.7 percent from 4.5 percent in the previous month, according to data released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) on Thursday.

According to the statistics agency, annual inflation in December surged to 26.5 percent from 21.6 percent in November.

“For the month of December 2023, the consumer price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages had the highest contribution to the month-on-month change in the index, followed by housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels,” ZIMSTAT said.

The Zimbabwean government this year maintained a tight monetary and fiscal policy stance to keep inflation under control.
