Zoomlion Ghana, a giant in the waste management as well as environmental sanitation business in Ghana and Africa, has donated Gh ¢ 10,000.00 and 10 Motorbikes as their contribution towards the maiden edition of the Local Government awards to take place next year.
The award is an initiative of The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with Investment Link Ghana Limited and Talent Media, both private events and media companies to highlight Ghana’s local government areas as competitive and investment friendly entities and to support government’s effort to fast-track the decentralization process.
The awards dubbed “the Local Government Awards Scheme” will capture and project investment potentials, sanitation, good governance, human development initiatives and general adherence to decentralization in Ghana’s entire district, municipal and metropolitan areas.
The award is also expected to further deepen self-reliance of the economies of Ghana’s local government areas through investment stimulation, consequent job creation and also expected to generally enhance the country’s much anticipated decentralization programme.
Mr. Michael Agyekum, Deputy Minister for the Ministry who received the items said he “believed that the awards will motivate local governments to up their game which will eventually lead to good governance of the environment and issues relating to the environment”
Adding that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development considers the proposed awards scheme a very laudable project that needs to be supported.
“I believe that other corporate bodies would be encouraged by this donation”, he said.
“ the awards would become one of the biggest events in the country”, he anticipated.
A consultant to the project, Mr. David Tamakloe in an interview with this paper said that Zoom Lion and other companies have indicated their support for the award in a manner that shows clearly that corporate Ghana is genuinely concerned about the development of Ghana.
“It is in the interest of every Ghana that the decentralization policy of government is fully accomplished: It is the way to promote good governance, it is the way to ensure development touches the life of the ordinary person and it is the way to ensure every citizen is involved in the governance process”, he enumerated.
According to Mr. Tamakloe, measures are being put in place to ensure the success of the award.
