3 Chinese Nationals and 3 Others On Remand for Illegal Mining

The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested six illegal miners including three Chinese nationals and their Ghanaian accomplices at Denkyira near Nkawkaw.

The suspects were arrested during operation carried out by the Rapid Deployment Unit of the police led by Superintendent Richardson Kumeko, the outgoing New Juaben Municipal Police Commander.

The suspects were brought to the Eastern regional Police Headquarters where their caution statements were taken.

They have been charged with three counts of offence including mining without license and possession of explosive arms without authorization.

The suspects have since been remanded to reappear on April 12, 2017 to allow police conduct further investigations.

Ultimate news’ Kojo Ansah reported that the police retrieved four excavators, two pump action guns, 68 cartridges and three pumping machines.

Already, 29 foreigners including 25 Nigerians, Togolese, Malians, Guinea Conakry, and arrested by the forestry commission for illegally mining in the Atewa Forest reserve in January 26,2017 are currently facing trial at the Koforidua Circuit Court.

According to the PRO of the Eastern regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the operation is in furtherance to the three week ultimatum issued to the illegal miners to terminate their operation

He said the Police is ready to terminate the activities of the illegal miners in fulfilment of the government’s vision.
