The death toll from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on the African continent reached 1,959 as the number of confirmed cases hit 49,352 as of Wednesday, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.
The Africa CDC in its latest situation update issued on Wednesday also revealed the number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases across the continent rose from 47,118 on Tuesday to 49,352 as of Wednesday afternoon, eventually registering about 2,234 new cases during the past 24-hour period.
The virus has so far spread into 53 African countries and 16,315 people who have been infected with the COVID-19 have recovered across the continent as of Wednesday, marking about 726 new recoveries from the center’s previous report on Tuesday afternoon that was 15,589, it said.
The death toll due to the COVID-19 pandemic across the African continent also surged from 1,843 on Tuesday afternoon to 1,959 on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Africa CDC.
Figures from the Africa CDC also showed that amid the rapid spread of the virus across the continent, the highly COVID-19 affected African countries include South Africa with 7,572 confirmed cases, Egypt with 7,201 confirmed cases, Morocco with 5,219 confirmed cases as well as Algeria with 4,838 confirmed cases.
The Africa CDC also disclosed that the Northern African region is the most affected area across the continent both in terms of positive COVID-19 cases, as well as the number of deaths, in which the three Northern African countries that are Algeria, Egypt and Morocco have so far reported 1,103 deaths.
