Ghana’s senior men’s football team, the Black Stars, has fallen six in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings and is now positioned at 70th globally.
This ranking, released on September 19, reflects the team’s disappointing performance in the September 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where they struggled against Angola and Niger.
This marks Ghana’s lowest FIFA ranking since June 2005, when they were placed 76th, and it represents the 14th lowest position in the Black Stars’ history.
The current decline echoes a troubling period between May 2002 and June 2004, during which Ghana dropped from 52nd to 89th.
On the African continent, the Black Stars have slipped from 12th to 14th place, overtaken by Cabo Verde, which maintained its 65th position in the world following mixed results against Mauritania and Egypt.
Since 2015, Ghana has ranked 25th; the team’s decline has been gradual yet steady despite numerous managerial changes and player adjustments. Morocco continues to lead Africa, holding its 14th position globally, while Senegal remains second in Africa despite a two-place drop to 21st. Egypt improved by five spots to 31st, solidifying its third-place standing on the continent.
Kenya made the most significant gains in Africa this month, rising six places to 102nd after a win over Namibia and a draw against Zimbabwe. Conversely, Namibia experienced the sharpest decline, dropping seven spots to 105th after losses to Kenya and Cameroon in their AFCON qualifiers.
