Former President John Dramani Mahama has unequivocally denounced the escalating harassment of journalists and has pledged to uphold press freedom if elected president in the upcoming elections.

Speaking in Accra on Sunday, Mahama expressed profound concern over the recent surge in incidents targeting journalists in the country. He emphasized that a free press is fundamental to democracy and condemned any actions undermining journalists’ ability to perform their crucial role.

Mahama affirmed, addressing reporters, that “I will not tolerate or condone any form of harassment against journalists during their duties.”

He committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including the public, to address the issue effectively, promising to initiate necessary legislative amendments to bolster protections for journalists.

Mahama assured that “we will engage in dialogue and pursue legislative reforms that support and enhance the work of journalists.”

His comments come amidst growing international and domestic concerns regarding press freedom in Ghana, underscoring Mahama’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding democratic principles and ensuring a free and vibrant media landscape.
