Mali’s transitional government announced on Sunday, August 4, that it would immediately sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine.
The decision follows controversial statements by Andriy Yusov, spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, who admitted Ukraine’s involvement in acts of terrorism in Mali that led to the deaths of Malian Defense and Security Forces members.
The remarks, also echoed by Yurii Pyvovarov, Ukraine’s ambassador to Senegal, prompted the Malian government to take decisive action.
In response, Mali has:
Cut all diplomatic ties with Ukraine.
We have implemented measures to ensure stability, including heightened scrutiny of Ukrainian diplomatic missions in the region.
Called on regional and international organizations, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations (UN), to address the situation.
The move marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations and highlights the growing concerns over regional security.
