Mauritanian health authorities on Thursday reported 32 more confirmed cases of COVID-19, bring the country’s total number to 173.
According to Sidi Ould Zahav, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, after 650 rapid tests and 64 laboratory tests, 32 cases were confirmed positive for COVID-19, including 26 cases of follow-up contacts and 6 due to community transmission.
Among the new cases, 20 are from the capital city Nouakchott, where the Mauritanian government has prohibited people from entering and leaving.
Zahav also announced that the country has 164 asymptomatic patients who are currently under quarantine.
The Mauritanian authorities maintain a strict control in public places, especially in markets, to push for mask-wearing and hand-washing.
The government decided on Wednesday to appoint a commission of 20 members from different sectors, including civil society and the opposition parties, to manage the fund set up on March 25 to finance the national anti-coronavirus strategy.
So far, Mauritania has reported 173 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4 deaths and 6 recovery cases, since March 13. Enditem
