Mr Roger Kwashie Adjei, the Principal Environmental Health Assistant, Hohoe Municipal Assembly, has called on residents of Alavanyo Kpeme to own household toilets.
He said household toilets holds the key to improving personal and environmental hygiene and asked the people to invest in personal toilets and help stop open defecation in the Municipality.
Mr Adjei was addressing a sensitization forum on Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and Revenue Mobilization in line with the local Assembly’s campaign to end open defecation in the Municipality.
The assembly recently adopted CLTS as a strategy to ensure that every household in the capital, other towns, villages, and hamlets has a safe and affordable toilet with a hand washing facility.
Mr Adjei said over-reliance on public toilets by residents was stressing the public facilities and posing sanitation hazards to the people hence the need for every household to own a toilet.
He said having household toilet was a requirement in the Assembly’s byelaws adding that offenders would be made to face the law.
Mr Adjei said some households in the Municipality connected waste water from their houses into drains along the streets adding that the practice was unlawful and urged the perpetrators to desist from such acts.
Mr Ridwan Inusah, Local Government Inspector in the Assembly, on revenue mobilization, took the community members through the various taxes and tax rates of the Municipal Assembly and the need for them to fulfill their tax obligations.
He said it is important for the citizens to help government through the Municipal Assembly to raise funds for developmental projects.
Mr Inusah said government cannot provide all amenities to communities and urged community members to mobilise and initiate self- help projects with support from the Assembly.
Some people who spoke with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) appealed to the Assembly and government to support households with materials for household latrines.
They also called for bad roads in the Municipality be fixed.
Madam Josephine S. Asigbetse, Assembly woman for Alavanyo Kpeme, pledged to sustain the campaign and ensure that households in the area owned toilets.
