Samsung is South Korea’s largest chaebol, the family-controlled conglomerates that wield great economic and political power in the country.
The company was founded in 1938 in Taegu, Korea, as a trading company.
Its name means three stars in Korean.
Shares owned by the Lee family in control of Samsung Group soared up 94.5 per cent to 26.06 trillion won (23.6 billion US dollars) last year, the Yonhap News Agency reported in December, quoting research firm Chaebul.com.
The Samsung Group has numerous interests including electronics, heavy industry and engineering.
The company is headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul.
The subsidiary Samsung Electronics Co Ltd produces mainly consumer electronics products: televisions, household appliances, computers, mobile phones and electronics components.
