The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) called for efforts to create a platform for enhanced awareness and implementation of the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 and the global Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The East African block made the call during its meeting on the Sub-regional Coordination Mechanism (SRCM) for Eastern and Southern Africa, which is being hosted by IGAD in Djibouti as of Monday.
The meeting, underway with a theme “Refocusing the Sub-Regional Coordination Mechanism,” mainly aspires to create a platform for enhanced awareness and implementation of the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
According to IGAD, the meeting, which brought together regional economic communities, intergovernmental organizations and UN agencies, aims to identify opportunities for joint planning and program implementation at the sub-regional level.
The meeting, among other things, aims to provide a forum for stakeholders to dialogue and make recommendations on how to reorient and refocus the Sub-Regional Coordination Mechanism for strengthened delivery and program implementation on major development agenda, it was noted.
Mahboub Maalim, IGAD Executive Secretary, commended the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA) for its leading role in sustaining the Sub-Regional Coordination Mechanism process during the last seven years.
Maalim further affirmed that the gathering is the highest technical level in the best position to inform change makers.
The meeting is also expected to contribute to the transformation of the SRCM into an effective and efficient coordination mechanism in Eastern and Southern Africa.
The 17th Session of the RCM-Africa, which took place in April 2016 in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, had also reiterated the need to support the AU in implementing its flagship Agenda 2063 and the global Agenda for Sustainable Development through the framework for a renewed UN-AU Partnership for Africa’s Integration and Development Agenda (PAIDA).
