Water pollution and indiscriminate deforestation through illegal mining, nicknamed galamsey, have slowed down Ghana’s environmental protection agenda for several years.
To help arrest these national menaces, the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, has procured a hundred acres of land from the Oboyo Forest Reserve in the Central and Eastern Regional Political Districts to cultivate farm produce and to also own 40 per cent of trees be planted in the forest in the next fifteen years.
Hon Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere made the disclosure when he visited the depleted portions of Oboya Forest Reserve, where a pair of twin brothers, Atta Kakra and Atta Panyin, formerly engaged in illegal mining, have vowed to plant trees to return the forest to its past glory.
The minister commended Atta Kakra and Atta Panyin for turning over a new leaf by shunning galamsey. He also pledged to liaise with respective state agencies and non-governmental organisations to support their aforestation agenda.
Hon Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere recalled that one day he and some state security officials attempted to arrest some people mining illegally in the Prah River. Although most absconded, Atta Kakra and Atta Panyin surrendered and pledged to refrain from the galamsey activities.
He said the twin brothers, who blamed their past illegal mining activities on unemployment and the fight for economic survival, have since walked the talk and gained his trust.
The minister mentioned that Atta Kakra and Atta Panyin have vowed to support the government’s afforestation drive by working with him to plant several trees to bring back life into the depleted forest and secure the water bodies from pollution and drying up.
Hon Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere noted that Ghana has experienced significant forest depletion, losing 1.64 million hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2023, a 24 per cent decrease since 2000 because of mining.
He hoped that if 19.7 per cent of the current unemployed youth accept tree planting initiatives and agriculture, something so dear to President John Dramani Mahama, it would solve the unemployment issues, ensure food security in the country and of course protect the nation’s water bodies from contamination.
However, Mr Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere noted with concern that creating jobs through farming is capital intensive, explaining, that about GHS1 000 000 would be needed to execute the project successfully.
Oboyo Forest Reserve
The minister estimated that he would need GHS14 000 to plant trees on one acre of land for 4 years.
Since he cannot single-handedly bear the project cost, Hon Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere pleaded with President John Dramani Mahama, religious bodies and concerned individuals to support the youth who want to venture into farming or tree planting to save the earth, ensure food security, and reduce unemployment.
The twin brothers, Atta Panyin and Atta Kakra, told the media that they regretted their past illegal mining activities. The twins said even though they knew about galamseys’ negative impacts on human lives and the environment, hunger and peer pressure compelled them to act indifferently.
The former galamsey operators pleaded with those mining in the nation’s water bodies to discontinue and find alternative means of survival.
The Range Supervisor in charge of the Oboyo Forest Reserve, Emmanuel Peprah, disclosed that 100 acres of the land have been allocated to the Central Regional Minister for onward distribution to those who are prepared to work and follow the specifications of the Forestry Reserve.
He indicated that the beneficiaries would comply with the “modified Tonja system” which mandates them to clear the land, plant food crops, and intercrop them with the new breeds of timber for five years.
He explained further that the farmers would take care of the forest till the trees were ready for harvest in 15 years.
Mr Peprah revealed that the government would benefit 60 per cent of the timbers, and 40 per cent, including crops would go to the farmers.

The investor will also aid the region in planting trees in an area where there used to be a forest, which is a practice aimed at restoring previously existing forests and woodlands that have been destroyed or damaged (Reafforestation) together with the provision of mechanized boreholes and potable drinking water.
The Turkish ambassador to Ghana posited that his government will organize an investment and trade conference for the region in Turkey in May 2025 to explore business opportunities for Ahafo entrepreneurs and business executives.
H.E. Huseyin Gungor made these known when the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Charity Gardiner with a delegation paid a courtesy call on him at the Turkish embassy in Accra on Friday, 14th March 2025.
He further stated that the Ahafo region has vast opportunities in areas of mineral resources, agriculture, health, education and tourism. Hence, there is a need to explore these potentials.
H.E. Huseyin Gungor commended Ghana for political stability and strong democracy, and that, these factors have made the country very attractive for investments and trade.
The Ahafo regional minister, Hon. Charity Gardiner, applauded the Turkish government for strengthening and sustaining good relations between Ghana and Turkey over the years.
Hon. Charity Gardiner urged for the enhancement of new economic cooperation in trade and investment between Turkey and the Ahafo Region for mutual benefit.
Western North Celebrates International Women’s Day
The United Nations theme for International Women’s Day 2025 is “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” International Women’s Day 2025 also has the theme of #AccelerateAction.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark document outlining critical areas for gender equality.
The theme emphasizes the ongoing need to ensure that all women and girls have their rights, equality, and empowerment realised.
It underscores the importance of continuing to work towards gender equality.
In Ghana, it is a day to recognise women’s achievements and contributions to society.
The Nketesia Hemaa of Sefwi Kessekrom, Ruth Akosua Mintah, has expressed gratitude to the women around the Western North Region and mother Ghana for their resilience towards national development.
Akosua Mintah has urged women to collaborate for equal participation and leadership in public life, which is essential to achieving better growth for the country’s young generation.
The Nketesia Hemaa advised women to be self-reliant and do something for a better future to support their vision.
Assembly members also shared their views. They emphasised that women should be courageous and hopeful for everything good, and asked them to look up to Ghana’s first female vice president, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and other enterprising women worldwide, as their role models, and aspire for greatness.
They also continue to advise women to champion themselves in everything they do, reject fear and panic and believe that ‘what a man can do, a woman can also do and even better.’
Efforts to curb illegal mining and promote responsible mining practices in the Eastern Region have been intensified with the Regional Minister, Mrs Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, engaging stakeholders in the sector to address key challenges and strengthen regulatory compliance.
The two-day meeting, organised by the Eastern Regional Co-ordinating Council in collaboration with the Minerals Commission and other regulatory bodies, convened both large-scale and small-scale mining companies on 13th and 14th March 2025 in Koforidua and Kade, respectively, to address critical issues affecting the industry.
The engagement focused on tackling the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey), ensuring compliance with mining regulations, and promoting sustainable mining practices. It also provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss challenges confronting the industry and explore collaborative solutions.
Minister Engages Stakeholders To Win War Against Galamsey
Speaking at the meeting, the Regional Minister underscored the urgency of addressing illegal mining, which has led to environmental degradation, the destruction of water bodies, and a rise in mining-related fatalities. She emphasised that while responsible mining contributes to economic growth, reckless mining activities pose a severe threat to the region’s natural resources and livelihoods.
Mining companies, both large and small, were reminded of their responsibility to ensure that their operations adhere to environmental and safety regulations. The Minister expressed concern over reports that some legally operating miners had failed to reclaim mined-out lands, stressing that such negligence will not be tolerated. She warned that companies flouting these regulations risked losing their licences.
A warning was also issued to illegal miners operating in forest reserves and water bodies, urging them to desist from their activities immediately or face severe consequences.
Mrs Awatey reiterated that under the President Mahama-led government, no galamsey activities will be allowed under any circumstances and that the Eastern Regional Anti-Galamsey Task Force is fully prepared to take decisive action against offenders.
Minister Engages Stakeholders To Win War Against Galamsey
The engagement highlighted key issues, including regulatory compliance, environmental sustainability, health and safety measures, and the role of legal mining entities in combating galamsey. Mining companies were urged to take an active role in reporting illegal activities within their jurisdictions.
The meeting brought together representatives from the Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Anti-Galamsey Task Force, and other key stakeholders. Participants acknowledged the importance of continued engagements to strengthen enforcement and promote responsible mining practices across the region.
The Eastern Regional Minister expressed optimism that these discussions would lead to a renewed commitment from all stakeholders, ensuring that mining operations in the region align with legal and ethical standards while protecting the environment for future generations.
Ghana has and continues to face problems of forest depletion, pollution of water bodies through illegal mining and youth unemployment. To help arrest these national menaces, the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, has procured a hundred acre of land from the Oboyo Forest Reserve in the Central and Eastern Regional Political Districts to cultivate farm produces and to also own 40 percent of trees that would be planted in the forest in the next fifteen years.
Giving reasons for the visit to the Oboya Forest Reserve, where two twin brothers, Atta Kakra and Atta Panyin, who have vowed to stop the illegal gold mining in the Prah and to permanently go into farming and tree planting were shown their portion of the land, the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, disclosed that the two brothers did not ran just as others had done when spotted mining in the Prah River. But rather pleaded with him for land to go into farming. The regional minister added that the twin brothers assured him of the preparedness of some their accomplices to stop with the illegal mining and to go into farming just as they want to.
The regional minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, noted that Ghana has experienced significant forest depletion, losing one point 64 million hectares of tree covers between 2001 and 2023. A 24 percent decrease since 2000 according to his findings affect the Ashanti and Western Regions where mining activities are on the rise.
He was hopeful that if 19 point seven percent of the current unemployed youth in the country accept tree planting and agriculture which is so dear to the heart of president John Dramani Mahama, it won’t just solve the problem of Unemployment but will also ensure food security in the country and of course protect the nation’s water bodies from illegal mining activities.
Mr. Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere however, noted with concern that much as he is aware that many interested unemployed youth will like to embrace this opportunity, farming work is cost intensive, explaining, about one million Ghana cedis would be needed to execute the project successfully. Mr. Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere identified 14 thousand Ghana cedis as the quantum of amount needed to work on just one acre till the maturity of the trees to be planted in a matter of four years. Since he cannot single handedly bear the cost of this project, he pleaded with president John Dramani Mahama, religious bodies and individuals who are worried about activities of illegal miners and the unemployed youth in the country to support those who are interested in such a venture . He was optimistic that when this is done, food security in the country, water menaces and social vices among the youth would be addressed within the next one to two decades .
The two twin brothers, Atta Panyin and Atta Kakra, disclosed to the media that their conscience had always judged them wrongly whenever they stepped in rivers to mine gold. But had no other options since a beggar had no choices. Hence held the bull by the horns when the first met the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere at the site. They used the occasion to plead with their friends mining in the nation’s water bodies not to continue seeking for their selfish gains but to rather join them in the planting of trees and crops for a better Ghana. They used the media to plead with the government, NGOs and all well meaning Ghanaians for supports so as to ensure a better Ghana for all. They also urged the youth not free the minds from the thoughts that only white color jobs and quick monies can guarantee them butter and bread in life.
The Range Supervisor in charge of the Oboyo Forest Reserve, Emmanuel Peprah, who introduced the minister and the twin brothers to the site disclosed that one hundred of acres of the land has been allocated to the Central Regional Minister for onward distribution to those that are prepared to work and follow specifications of the Forestry Reserve. He explained that the beneficiaries will have to comply with the ” modified Tonja system” mandates them to clear the land plant food crops and inter-crop with the new breed of timber crops for five year. He explained further that the farmer then takes care of the forest till 15 years that the trees will be ready for harvesting. Mr. Peprah revealed that the government gets 60 percent of the timbers whilst the farmer enjoys 40 percent of the timber together with his

Tourism is another sector that stands to benefit significantly from Goldstar Air’s operations. By offering more flight options and better connectivity, the airline will make it easier for international tourists to visit Ghana and explore its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant cities. Tourist spending can have a significant impact on the local economies of the sites they visit; however, it also benefits the broader economy through job creation, local revenue generation, economic growth, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and increased tax revenue. Goldstar Air will grant accreditation to travel agencies, allowing them to access the airline’s inventory, accept payments, and issue tickets 24/7 on the airline’s behalf. The airline aims to change the narrative of a hostile relationship between agents and airlines, where agents often end up paying more for group bookings than the published fares.
Currently, more than 90 percent of travel agencies in Ghana have been denied access to the international booking platform or distribution system to even check airfares, due to the required Fifty Thousand dollars ($50,000) bank guarantee. To address this, Goldstar Air will introduce a more flexible booking or distribution system, allowing agents to deposit any preferred amount to issue tickets against, and this will come as a much-needed relief to these agencies. The airline will also offer Ghanaian tour operators competitive airfares for their clients, ensuring customer satisfaction at all times.
The travel agency industry suffered a significant setback in 2002 when airlines cut commissions entirely, but Goldstar Air is set to restore commissions for agents, offering them a fresh and rewarding way to do business and introducing a new way to fly.
Goldstar Air operational resources will help stabilize Ghana’s currency and may serve as a backup for the country’s reserves. This approach could help Ghana avoid future reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF). A historic example of this kind of patriotic financial support can be liked to 1976 when David Kotei Poison loaned his earnings from his second title defense boxing bout against Japanese fighter Shig Fukuyama to the Ghanaian government, led by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, to help purchase essential commodities for the state and support the economy.

Mr. Bannerman emphasized that Goldstar Air has applied to lease Accra Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 2 to use as its main hub. The airline plans to build modern passenger boarding bridges, duty-free shops, gyms, salons, offices, and other convenient, customer-centric facilities to enhance the experience of both departing and arriving passengers. This initiative will also break new ground in creating job opportunities for the youth in aviation and forms part of the airline’s commitment to enhancing all airports across Ghana.
The airline also plans to create an elevated walkway adorned with artwork along a moving walkway for a positive visual experience to link Terminals 2 and 3. This will allow passengers to seamlessly transfer between terminals without the need to board a shuttle bus or walk along the street to change flights.
Since airports are the gateway to vacations that are supposed to be relaxing, Accra Kotoka International Airport terminal 2 will now have a spa, which will be known as Spa on Air, and will have a sauna, hot tub, place to shower and relax after arriving or before departure. The spa service at the terminal will be created to meet one of travelers’ greatest needs, a space to relax and recover before a long flight, or during layovers.
The new spa will offer treatments ranging from massages and facials to nail care and pedicures and will bring an innovative and convenient wellness experience to guests who pass through this strategic travel hub.
The Terminal Hair Salon will provide passengers with a variety of hair-related services. The services will include Haircuts and trims, Single and double process colors, Highlights (cap or foil), Straightening treatments, Perms, Relaxers, Hair extensions, Blowouts, Braids, Basic hairstyles, and Formal hairstyles.
Beauty treatments like manicures and pedicures will also be available at the Terminal Salon. While manicures and pedicures are extremely rejuvenating treatments, they exude health benefits: they remove dead skin cells, keep your skin feeling soft and smooth, enhance the appearance of your hands, feet, and nails, and improve growth.
Accra Terminal 2 Lounge accessible gym will be located after the checkpoint and will provide travelers with access to cardio equipment, stretching space, free weights, medicine balls, and yoga props. Once you find yourself departing from, or connecting through Accra Terminal 2, consider squeezing in a workout before your flight. Frequent travelers can opt for an annual membership, which can be activated on the date of purchase and annual members can reserve a shower online up to 24 hours in advance.
Leasing Accra Terminal 2, which is currently underutilized, will significantly improve the passenger experience and prevent gate congestion during peak hours. Goldstar Air aims to avoid situations similar to the incident involving a Nigerian airliner’s inaugural flight from London to Lagos, where certain staff attempted to force the aircraft to park and disembarked passengers far from the airport and at a rejected section of Murtala Mohammed International Airport (LOS).
According to the Nigerian airline’s Chief Executive Officer, such action would have caused considerable inconvenience to passengers, who would have had to spend hours reaching the terminal. This situation, he warned, could have led to public backlash against the airline, as passengers would not have known the underlying cause. He further explained that despite C-23 at the new terminal being available, airport officials chose to reserve it for a foreign carrier, disregarding the needs of an indigenous airline. He added that officials expected them to transport international passengers to the terminal using rickety buses, which the same buses international airlines had rejected when the terminal opened. The CEO lamented internal conspiracies within Nigeria and noted that some were actively praying for the airline’s failure, but the good thing is that nobody is God.
Airports are vital to Ghana’s tourism industry, providing gateways to access the nation’s monumental national parks, breathtaking coastlines, and many other popular destinations. As the sky becomes the limit, Goldstar Air’s vision is set to enhance this critical sector.
Goldstar Air’s existence exemplifies this ‘qualitative’ impact, demonstrating that investment in new aviation infrastructure which provides greater access to the global air transport network will help expand Ghana’s economic productivity. This will provide valuable starting point for the quantification and inclusion of wider network benefits in future policy and investment decisions.
According to the Ghana Auditor-General’s Report on the accounts of public boards, corporations, and other statutory institutions in 2023, showed that in 2022 Ghana’s regional airports generated a combined revenue of GH¢13.13 million from their operations, as against an expenditure of GH¢39.14 million.
The resulting deficit of GH¢26.01 million has prompted a re-evaluation of strategies to optimize regional airport development and maximize economic benefits. The regional airports covered in the report are Prempeh I International Airport (formerly Kumasi Airport) in the Ashanti Region, Tamale Airport in the Northern Region, Wa Airport in the Upper West Region, Sunyani Airport in the Bono Region, and Ho Airport in the Volta Region.
Further breakdown of the data indicated that Kumasi Airport incurred an expenditure of GH¢15.68 million while generating only GH¢8.22 million in revenue. Tamale Airport generated GH¢4.74 million in revenue but recorded a much higher expenditure of GH¢15.41 million. Sunyani Airport accrued GH¢95,626.58 in revenue against an expenditure of GH¢4.53 million. Ho Airport, which generated no revenue, reported an expenditure of GH¢1.38 million, while Wa Airport generated GH¢77,250.48 in revenue and incurred GH¢2.15 million in expenditure.
The Auditor-General, therefore, recommended that the management of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) should encourage existing and potential domestic airlines to patronize these airports by offering possible incentives to them. Additionally, GACL should embark on a comprehensive publicity drive to promote and market these regional airports to attract more air travelers.
The Auditor-General also recommended that the Commercial Services Department of Ghana Airports Company Limited should identify potential concessionaires to occupy idle spaces within these airports to generate additional revenue through rent and royalties. Furthermore, the Auditor-General advised GACL management to liaise with appropriate regulatory authorities to reduce regulatory barriers for potential airlines, without compromising safety standards.
Goldstar Air’s planned improvements to Terminal 2 will significantly enhance Accra Airport’s capacity by optimizing passenger flow, improving security processes, and increasing the overall operational efficiency for both vertical (inbound and outbound) and lateral (transit) passenger movements. This initiative is not only about connecting people from one destination to another but also about creating a world-class aviation hub that will serve as a beacon of progress for Ghana’s economy.
The airline’s planned capital improvements at the airport are expected to generate additional take-offs and landings without requiring a runway expansion. With the airline’s anticipated rapid growth and the emergence of a new way to fly, the terminal redevelopment will allow Ghana to tap into this evolving market quickly.
The aviation industry contributes $3.5 trillion (4.1%) to the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). If aviation were a country, it would rank as the 17th in size by GDP, equivalent to the GDP of Indonesia or the Netherlands, and supports 87.7 million jobs globally.
Goldstar Air has initiated an airline alliance nicknamed Afrik Allianz, a multimodal single air transport alliance connecting Africa and beyond. Ongoing discussions are taking place behind the scenes with other African airlines to join the alliance, with the aim of facilitating intra-regional trade and regional integration through the seamless movement of goods, tourism, services, and people across over 121 airports in Africa, with further connections to other continents.
The airline anticipates a massive influx of passengers to Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers will be able to move freely within the terminal, although international transit passengers will still need to pass through dedicated checkpoints.
Passengers transiting from international to domestic flights will go through the full customs and baggage claim process, followed by domestic security screening. Domestic to international transit will be more straightforward but will still require passing through a customs/security exit checkpoint.
Commercial aviation is a key driver of global economic prosperity and provides the only rapid worldwide transportation network, making it essential for global businesses. It fosters economic growth, creates jobs, and facilitates international trade and tourism. In 2023, commercial aviation accounted for 5% of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to $1.37 trillion. U.S. airlines operate more than 26,000 flights daily, carrying 2.6 million passengers to and from nearly 80 countries, and transporting 61,000 tons of cargo to and from more than 220 countries. This solid foundation inspires Goldstar Air’s new way to fly from Ghana, connecting Africa, and beyond.
Goldstar Air’s tradition of naming its planes will serve as a unique way of blending aviation with culture. This fusion highlight that the true beauty of air travel extends beyond technology, it is about connection, the linking of distant places and people. Each aircraft will act as an ambassador, and always a touch more special, and more dignified, when carrying cultural identity and people it represents. Most importantly, names that honor notable figures who embody the spirit and legacy of Ghana and Africa.
The plane-naming pattern, which will appear on the Ghana registry, will feature designations such as 9G-H.E JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA, 9G-H.M OTUMFUO OSEI TUTU II, 9G-H.E GEORGE MANNEH WEAH, 9G-H.E SHEIKH OSMAN NUHU SHARUBUTU, 9G-H.M ABDULAI JINAPOR II, 9G-DR. KWAME NKRUMAH, 9G-TETTEH QUARSHIE, and others.
Documentaries showcasing the achievements of these individuals and the significance of the cities they represent will be featured on the aircraft screens during takeoff and landing. This is part of Goldstar Air’s broader vision as the airline projects a fleet of more than one hundred (100) modern aircraft serving a network of over ninety (90) key business and leisure destinations. The airline also aspires to earn recognition among the top one hundred (100) companies in Africa.
Economic developers view airlines as critical drivers for generating income and stimulating economic growth. The viability of Wa and Ho Airports will be bolstered by a 24-hour economic generator for Upper West and Volta Region of Ghana. Additionally, Hajj flights to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will create new economic opportunities for the Upper West and Volta regional capitals, further strengthening the connection between rural communities and global commerce, helping local businesses grow and attracting new investments to these areas.
Tamale will serve as a pivotal hub for Goldstar Air’s maintenance base, training school, catering services, and cargo operations. Plans are also underway to operate international passenger flights between Tamale and key destinations in the Sahel region, as well as Hajj flights to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Goldstar Air will initially operate flights from Kumasi to destinations such as Rome, Madrid, Hamburg, London, Düsseldorf, Milan, and Hajj flights to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Flights from Accra shall include destinations such as Washington, Dubai, Lagos, Toronto, Monrovia, Conakry, Abidjan, Guangzhou, Dakar, Banjul, Rhode Island, London, and Freetown, with future plans to serve additional cities such as Miami-Florida, Atlanta-Georgia, Chicago-Illinois, Glasgow-Scotland, Houston-Texas, and many more.
George Opare Addo, the Minister of Youth Empowerment and Development, is facing mounting allegations over the deployment of armed National Security operatives to interfere in student elections.
Eyewitnesses and student leaders claim that heavily armed operatives, some reportedly carrying AK-47 and Scorpion rifles, stormed the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) elections at Ensign Global University in Kpong on Wednesday, March 5. The operatives allegedly disrupted voting, intimidated and assaulted students, and blocked access to polling stations.
Reports suggest the operation was coordinated through key figures in the NDC Youth Wing, including its Director of Operations, Bernard Dartey (alias Kawawa), and Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Yakubu both of the National Security Secretariat- Blue Gate.
Bernard Dartey who was recruited into the National Security operative less than a month ago admitted executing the plan on Opare Addo’s instructions. Their alleged mission: to ensure that Jimmy Mawuse Adangbe, won at all costs. Notably, the election featured three presidential candidates, Jimmy Mawuse Adangbe, Baba Suleman, and Favour Aikins.
Additionally, some NDC activists dressed in military uniforms, allegedly under Bernard Dartey’s command, worked alongside these operatives to intimidate students and obstruct the voting process.
Allegations also implicate individuals associated with the youth wing, including Director of Students Affairs Bright Baah Egyir, Richard Class-Peters, Anthony Baah Danquah, and Sharif Mohammed Ayedakew, who were reportedly armed with pistols.
In a shocking escalation, security operatives reportedly fired gunshots to instill fear and enforce compliance.
Video evidences shows that the armed security operatives were standing by the ballot boxes as the students casted their votes. The operatives are also accused of vandalizing election materials and preventing students from entering the premises to cast their votes.
The controversy deepened when several institutions were arbitrarily barred from voting.
Among them were: University of Mines and Technology, Institute of Local Government Studies, University of Health and Allied Sciences and Ensign Global University, the host institution of the elections, which was shockingly excluded from the process.
GRASAG leadership has condemned the intervention as unnecessary and alarming. The unarmed police officers who GRASAG executive formally invited to provide security were sidelined by the armed security operatives. According to the police they neither called for reinforcement not invited the national security operatives.
Two of the vehicles identified at the private university are a white Nissan Hardbody pickup with registration numbers (AP 566-24) and a military pickup (44 GA 33).
Students, who were preparing for breakfast before the elections, were reportedly taken by surprise by the aggressive arrival of heavily armed operatives, creating an atmosphere of fear.
Many have drawn parallels between this incident and the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, where National Security operatives led by DSP Samuel Azugu attacked civilians. At the time, former President John Mahama and civil society groups strongly condemned the attack. Now, students are questioning why such tactics are being deployed under Mahama’s administration.
In January 2025, President John Dramani Mahama directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to launch an investigation into election-related deaths recorded during the 2020 and 2024 elections. The 2020 elections saw eight fatalities from gunfire allegedly discharged by military personnel in the Techiman South constituency of the Bono East Region.
A statement signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, addressed to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), noted that these incidents had left a lasting mark on the nation’s democratic process.
Amid the outrage, students are demanding an annulment of the election results and a fresh, fair election under neutral security supervision.
Other demands include a full government investigation into the involvement of National Security in the elections, punishment for those responsible for voter suppression and intimidation and a commitment from the government to prevent military-style interventions in student elections.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Honourable Francis-Xavier Sosu, has initiated a new private member’s bill aimed at restricting public service appointments after elections until the swearing-in of a new government.
The bill by the hardworking MP would amend Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution to prohibit the employment of persons to the public service from the day of elections (7th December) on election years to the day of the swearing-in (7th January) of an elected President, and to provide for related matters.
This initiative comes in response to controversies surrounding the termination of public sector workers recruited after December 7, 2024.
Addressing journalists to update them on the new bill, Honourable Sosu argued that last-minute appointments by outgoing governments create governance challenges and should be addressed through legislation.
“By the 7th of December 2028 to the 7th of January 2029, there shouldn’t be any appointments. Once the law is clear on that, the whole issue of people wanting to appoint when they have lost power—only for the new government to also dismiss them because there is no budgetary allocation for them—will be resolved,” he stressed.
He emphasized that ensuring a clear legal framework would prevent unnecessary dismissals and disruptions within the public sector.
“I believe that we can simply cure this by amending the law, and that is why we have put together a proposal, which we are presenting before the Parliament of Ghana. It is currently undergoing review, and once the law is ready, I am sure it will be made known to the people of Ghana,” he added.
The proposed bill is expected to spark discussions on governance practices and the management of public appointments during political transitions.
Currently, in Ghana, Honourable Sosu pointed out that there is no law preventing the President or persons acting on his behalf to appoint people to the Public Services even during election years.
According to him, this gap in the law has led to an abusive practice over the years where series of appointments are undertaken during or immediately after the declaration of election results by the Electoral Commission.
He stated that “This is obviously not good for good governance.”
“As representatives for the people, it is imperative to ensure the passage of a law that prohibits new employment in the public service between the date of the election and the date of swearing-in of a newly elected president.
“By enacting this law, we can facilitate a smoother transition of power; ensure stability in the public service; prevent potential abuse of power; protect the public trust; and uphold the integrity of our democratic processes to deliver a more secure and progressive society,” astute lawyer stated.
