STATEMENT OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF GHANA STUDENTS (NUGS)
ON FRIDAY, 25 MAY, 2012 THE AFRICAN UNION’S DAY
African Governments Must be Committed to Job Creation Now!
Exactly forty-eight (48) years ago on May, 25 1963 the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now
African Union (AU) was established in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to lead the emancipation fight which
is now lost on our new African Governments.
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) looks into our past with optimism that in the face
of decaying economies in the pre and post independence era in the life of our continent, we as a
people of Africa never waiver in our attempt to move on.
Yes we have moved on as a continent and the students of Ghana dully recognized this with some
level of confidence.
Today, Africa is recognized internationally as a continent with a burgeoning economic growth.
However, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) wants to remark that, in the midst of the
steady growth of Africa’s economy, the issue of Youth Joblessness is fast swallowing us as a
people.
From Accra to Bamako, Cape Town to Mogadishu mass of the youth are growing unemployed due
largely to misplaced national policies that have been hostile to local initiatives. The incident of the
youth who set himself ablaze resulting in the People’s Revolution in Tunisia is a case in point.
Here in Ghana, the issue of Graduate Joblessness will soon explode in the face of the
Professor Mills-led-Government that is growing insensitive to the plights of the good
people of this country. NUGS is surprise that, instead of delivering the PUBLIC GOODS
to the people as promised, Government functionaries of the National Democratic
Congress (NDC) have rather resorted to blaming innocent persons and institutions for
their incapabilities. This sordid situation of Government Official-blame-game is
becoming the norm in our continent.
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is glad that the theme for this year’s African Union
Celebration is: Boosting Intra-Africa Trade.
We must sound the clarion call that, our individual smaller countries cannot remain in isolation
and champion an export-oriented economy when there is a readily available market for goods
produced in this continent. We must industrialize our economies and our national Governments
must pull down barriers to intra-Africa trade in this continent without failing.
As the continent marks the birth of the African Union (AU) today, the Students of Ghana wants to
wish all Africans a blissful celebration and it is our fervent hope that this day will invigorate and
remind us to go after the things that hold us as a people together instead of chasing after the
wind which has been the norm of our national Governments.
LONG LIVE NUGS
LONG LIVE GHANA
LIVE AFRICA UNION (AU)
LONG LIVE AFRICA
Thank you.
