The global e-commerce industry is poised to reach a staggering $4.1 trillion in 2024, with nearly 30% of this total coming from the United States, the world’s second-largest market for online sales.
Amidst intense competition in US e-commerce, Amazon is the absolute king, wielding significant dominance in three major product categories.
Its substantial revenue lead over competitors in these segments underscores Amazon’s supremacy. In electronics sales, a cornerstone of its offerings, Amazon generated a staggering $133.1 billion in 2023. This figure dwarfs the total of $53.1 billion from tech giant Apple and retail powerhouse Walmart. Apple contributed $28.3 billion, while Walmart followed with $24.8 billion, illustrating Amazon’s outsized influence in this critical sector.
The e-commerce giant’s dominance extends to the hobby and leisure category, which recorded $138.1 billion in net revenue, outshining Apple’s $25.5 billion and Chevrolet’s $11.7 billion. Amazon maintained a commanding position in furniture and homeware, with $25.3 billion in sales, leading Walmart’s $16.3 billion by a significant margin.
While Walmart edged out Amazon in online fashion sales, Amazon led in categories such as grocery and DIY, underlining its broad market reach and diverse product portfolio.
Overall, Amazon captures a formidable 26% share of US online sales, reflecting its unparalleled scale and customer appeal. With Americans projected to spend over $1.2 trillion online in 2024, Amazon’s market dominance is expected to remain robust as e-commerce continues its upward trajectory.
Looking ahead, Statista forecasts a substantial growth trajectory for the US e-commerce market, with total spending projected to exceed $1.8 trillion by 2029. The number of US online shoppers is also expected to rise significantly, reaching over 333 million by the end of the decade.
