Ghana coach Otto Addo has stated that Andre Ayew’s potential return to the Black Stars hinges on his ability to secure a club and demonstrate strong performances.
Ayew has been excluded from the squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger, marking his second consecutive omission.
Despite being in good form, he was also absent from the crucial June 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a significant event in the football calendar.
Addo explained that he had informed Ayew of his decision, though the former Swansea City star did not agree.
Addo defended his choice, indicating that the team’s direction is evolving towards a younger, more dynamic squad.
Ayew’s exclusion, which was anticipated given his current status as a free agent after leaving Le Havre, has raised questions about his future with the Black Stars, where he has been a key player since 2007.
During his squad announcement on Thursday, Addo noted that while Ayew is a quality player, his return is not assured.
“Andre Ayew is a quality player, but he is not with us at the moment.
He doesn’t have a club at the moment, but the future is unpredictable,” Addo said.
He added, “If he secures a club, performs well, and scores 20 goals, maybe he can return because we are building something for the future.”
