Bayport Savings and Loans PLC is using Ghana’s lower borrowing costs to widen credit access for teachers, nurses and other salaried workers, its chief executive said this week in Accra.

Akwasi Aboagye, Bayport’s chief executive officer, told the Ghana Stock Exchange’s (GSE) Facts Behind the Figures programme that falling rates have let the payroll lender cut its own pricing and reach more customers in the public-sector workforce, a segment long underserved by formal credit.

Bayport reported a profit of GH¢218 million in the first half of 2026 and is targeting GH¢436 million by year-end, part of a wider push to expand in the government payroll market, according to figures released alongside the GSE presentation. GSE Managing Director Abena Amoah said Bayport has raised more than GH¢725 million through 25 tranches in the fixed-income market since 2015, and that she hopes the company’s anticipated equity listing on the exchange will go ahead.

Aboagye said the pricing cuts let the company “serve a lot more customers,” and tied the strategy to operational discipline and maintaining the confidence of investors who fund the business. Bayport now controls about 33% of its market, he said, and plans to build on that position by signing up more teachers and other salaried workers.

Ghana’s central bank has held its benchmark policy rate at 14% since May, pausing after five consecutive cuts earlier in 2026 that brought borrowing costs down from far higher levels. The pause means the pricing gains Bayport is passing on to customers reflect cuts already banked rather than a fresh easing cycle, even as lenders continue working through the effect of last year’s reductions.

Amoah said Bayport’s focus on public-sector workers such as teachers supports wider efforts to reduce inequality and expand economic opportunity. She also pointed to broader momentum on the exchange, citing GH¢281 billion in trading volume so far in 2026 against GH¢1.145 trillion for all of 2025, and said the GSE has facilitated three initial public offerings in the past six months, with a listing by WeShare still to come.

Bayport has not set a date for the equity listing Amoah referenced.
