Burkina Faso to hold ceremony marking end of disarmament of putschists

A symbolic ceremony marking the end of disarmament of soldiers of ex-Presidential Security Regiment (RSP) who organized the recent failed coup in Burkina Faso will be held on Tuesday in Ouagadougou, an official source said Monday.

According to the same source, the ceremony will be held at the Place of the Nation, the epicenter of the uprising that led to the collapse of Blaise Compaore’s regime in October 2014.

Gen. Gilbert Diendere, the former army chief under Compaore, as well as several other military officers suspected of involvement in the Sept. 17 coup, are currently being held in detention in Ouagadougou.

The matter is being handled by the military judiciary and majority of the soldiers who served under RSP have reported to barracks where they were deployed.

The government gave an assurance that all those who had been arrested will face a fair trial.

From Friday last week, Burkina Faso government imposed a curfew from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. and the police force has asked the population across the country to respect the new order. Enditem
