It is about time government deals massively with the matter of Child Labour throughout the country.
Child labour is a system where children under 13 years are force into hard labour either for monitory or any other material gain.
The problem of child labour seems to be on the increase and indeed has become one of the major factors that is retarding the progress and development of the nation.
This problem has come to stay owing to poverty and single parenting. One cannot escape the fact that due to the harsh economic situation in the country today, most parents have more or less becomes paupers finding it very difficult to afford three square meal a day let alone take care of their children.
Children of such parents have no alternative way of surviving than to avail themselves to any form of job to make a living.
They come to the city of Accra to make a living.
I was on my usual routine on Monday as a Journalist just to found out what is on and what is not in the city of Accra. I visited Agbogloshie which is known to be one the biggest markets in Accra.
I was shocked when I saw young girls and of 13 and 14 years both boys and girls in the area working seriously to make a living.
The boys were however noted to have been selling dirty oil where as some of the young girls were carrying their head pans like slaves or people who are from refugees? camp.
I interrogated them and this was what some of them said, ?My brother cost of living these days has become high, it not easy to afford a three square mean a day, let alone talk of paying school fees and be?? at school.?
One of them added that they were hoping that the free SHS that the NPP was talking about will come to existence to enable them at least continue with their education.
They said should the free SHS be implemented most of them who had already completed their JHS can continue.
They are calling on government to come to their aid by implement the free SHS policy.
