Manchester City emerged as Group D winners of the 2015/2016 UEFA Champions League after coming from behind to beat Borussia Monchengladbach 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium, England on Tuesday.
Birthday boy, Raheem Sterling scored twice in two minutes whiles Wilfried Bony and David Silva added the other two goals.
Raheem Sterling celebrating his 21st birthday was on quick fire throughout the game. The English winger played on midfielder David Silva with a classy backheel in the 16th minute for the Spanish to slot in the ball.
The Germans responded quickly and pulled parity through Korb. The match was full of attacking instinct, but Yaya Toure and Raheem Sterling missed glorious opportunities.
The visitors took the lead before the break when Raffael connected Fabian Johnson’s shot past City goalie Joe Hart.
Manchester City began to hunt after the break and nearly leveled the scores when Raheem Sterling followed up Nico Elvedi’s back pass to Yann Sommer but the goalie came out to clear off the ball.
Sommer again pulled magnificent saves from Raheem Sterling and Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure.
But Yann Sommer couldn’t deny Sterling in the 79th minute when the English midfielder smashed in Gael Clichy’s pass. Sterling was on target again in the 81st minute when he turned Bony’s pass into goal.
Substitute Wilfred Bony signed off the night in the 85th minute with a close-range finish to put the scores at 4-2 for Man City.
However, Llorente’s 65th minute strike was enough to seal a win for Sevilla over Juventus in Spain.
Manchester City leapfrogged to the summit of the Group D table with 12 points whiles Juventus dropped to second with 11 points.
