The Ghana Islamic Governance Framework Committee, which is yet to be inaugurated, would also provide modalities for the choice of spiritual leaders and the administration of mosques and other Muslim spiritual centres at community, district, regional and national levels.

wpid-COMOG.jpgHajj Abdel Manan Abdel Rahman, the General Secretary of COMOG, made this known when he led a two-man delegation from the National Executive Council to pay a courtesy call on the Management of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Thursday.

The purpose of the visit was to solicit the support of the GNA in the implementation of the plans to develop a Muslim leadership governance framework, especially for Imamship in Ghana.

Other terms of reference of the Committee include considering the existing Islamic administrative structures in the various parts of the country, with the view to harmonising those structures into one framework.

It would alsomake recommendations for the sustainability ofthe various structures within the framework, and provide guidelines for its harmonious implementation.

Hajj Abdel Rahman said in the process of carrying out its mandate, the Committee was expected to meet and interact with Muslim leaders in all the regions in the country, particularly the leadership of the three major Islamic groups namely the Tijaniyyah, AhluSunnah, and Shia for their input.

He said the Committee would also interact with and invite memos from Islamic groups and other stakeholders including Muslim traditional rulers, politicians, youth groups and professional bodies.

He indicated that COMOG took into consideration factors including sectarian, ethnic, political and academic/professional balancein the nomination of members to serve on the FrameworkCommittee.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GNA, Dr Bernard Otabil, described the work of the Committee as imperative, saying that the absence of a clear-cut line of succession for the office of the National Chief Imam and other leadership positions within the Muslim community could create room for dispute and conflict.

He said the GNA’s mandate included the promotion of national unity and national cohesion, and therefore assuredthe delegation of the Agency’s collaboration and supporttowardsthe successful discharge of COMOG’s assignment.

“You can count on our involvement in anything that has to do with promotingthe country’s peace and development. Do not hesitate to let us know whenever our contribution is required”, hesaid.
