The Secretariat of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) said it has been following with keen interest the current situation in Egypt characterized by massive anti-government demonstrations and the subsequent military coup d??tat against the first ever democratically elected President .
According to AASU, the people of Egypt, after decades of military rule took into the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and every other place in the country to put an end to Hosni Mubarak?s rule, hence to military rule. As a result they went to the polls and elected Mohammed Morsi as President. The subsequent undemocratic removal of President Morsi by the Military is a large indictment on the collective conscience of the people of Egypt, it noted.
“While it is a right for any group of people living in a democratic environment to demonstrate within the confine of the law to express their disaffection about any policy of the government, it would be undemocratic for any group of people and more so for the military to remove their leaders anytime they are not satisfied with policies and programmes in blatant violation of the constitution of the Land.”
it also said, Mohammed Morsi, though must have erred, was elected by the people for a specific term in Office. It is surprising that just after one year in power; he was removed from Office at gun point. We hope that the military is not using the opportunity of civilian demonstrations to regain back in a subtle manner people?s power, adding that “It is worrisome to note that Egypt is gradually slipping in violent and vicious circle whereby one group?? chases another from power through violent means and vice versa. The World and in particular Africa must not accept that ugly scenario on the continent particularly for a country like Egypt. We would like to add our voice to all democratic forces and in particular the African Union (AU) to condemn the military takeover in Egypt and call for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.”
