The interim President of Mali was mobbed on Monday

ECOWAS has strongly condemned the mob attack on Dioncounda Traore, the Interim President of Mali, at his palace in Koulouba, Bamako, on Monday.

The commission vowed to carry out necessary investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Désiré Ouedraogo, who made the remarks in a statement on Tuesday, said appropriate sanctions would be meted out to the culprits.

He said the aggression was considered an affront on the commission’s decision.

“ECOWAS will carry out the necessary investigations to identify the perpetrators of this reprehensible act, and will apply the appropriate sanctions against them,” he said.

“ECOWAS is dismayed that a crowd of unruly demonstrators could so easily access the President, and physically attack him, despite the elaborate security measures in place.”

Ouedraogo pointed out that the frequency, with which the demonstrations occurred, as soon as ECOWAS took decision aimed at the restoration of constitutional order in Mali, confirmed that they were orchestrated by forces bent on impeding the smooth progress of the transitional process.

“ECOWAS remains firmly committed to the pursuit of measures needed for the restoration of constitutional order in Mali, and reaffirms its unflinching support to the transitional authorities,” he said.
