Police blame continued killings on citizens’ refusal to give up vital information

Relatives of Goni Mustapha, on Wednesday, reported that unknown gunmen stormed the late cleric’s house and shot him dead in Gwange, Borno State.
According to relatives, people suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, on Tuesday at about 7:30pm, killed the 92-year-old Islamic cleric.
Ibrahim Sulaiman, a witness, said: “About four gunmen invaded his residence in the evening shortly after prayers. The attackers divided themselves into two groups, the first group went in to kill the cleric while the other group kept vigil at the entrance.”
Sulaiman said the killers came inside the deceased’s compound and shot him several times before leaving, adding that the remains of the cleric had been buried at the Gwange Cemetery according to Islamic rites.
The state’s police spokesperson, Samuel Tizhe confirmed the incident, blaming the continued killings on residents’ refusal to give up vital information.
“The killing took place yesterday in the evening but nobody came to inform the police,” he said.
“How can the police trace the killers without information? People must learn to supply vital information to the police to enable us carry out our duty of protecting lives and property.”
