A 25-year-old convict at Ankaful Prison in Cape Coast, Isaac Appiah aka Kojo Effah, who broke jail about five months ago, has been arrested by the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) District Police Command.
Appiah, who was hiding at Etsie Fameye near Nyankumasi, was arrested by a committee chairman, after Appiah stole a sack of cocoa beans.
Briefing DAILY GUIDE on Wednesday, the AAK District Police Commander, DSP Bernard Twum-Barima, said the committee chairman and others spotted Appiah in town carrying the sack of cocoa beans on September 16, 2012.
DSP Twum-Barima noted that upon questioning, the suspect could not explain how he got the cocoa beans so he was sent to the police station.
He added that the people in the area had been complaining about their cocoa beans being stolen so it compelled them to be vigilant and monitor the movement of unknown people in the town.
DSP Twum-Barima disclosed that while Appiah was in his cell, the officer on duty heard some strange noise from there. When the officer went to check what was amiss, he saw the suspect digging a hole through the wall to enable him to run away.
He was later arraigned before the Abura Dunkwa Magistrate court presided over by Efua Wirenkyi where he was sentenced to two years? imprisonment.
He was charged with sealing, attempting to escape from lawful custody and causing damage.
DSP Twum-Barima stated that investigations revealed that Appiah was a known criminal who had been to Ankaful Prison twice and escaped while he and other prisoners were out working. He escaped after serving five months of his two-year sentence for stealing green pepper.
The commander thanked the people in the area for not lynching him when they arrested him.
He added that Appiah would be arraigned before a circuit court in Cape Coast after serving his two-year term.
