MobileMoney Fintech CEO Shaibu Haruna says Ghana’s digital finance sector must move beyond basic access and focus on customers’ long-term financial health.
Haruna made the case on a panel on mobile money, agency banking and digital payments at the inaugural Ecobank-Joy Business Financial Dialogue Series in Accra, themed “Driving Financial Inclusion Through Digital Transformation.” “The focus has shifted from financial inclusion to financial health and financial well-being,” he said, pointing to MMFL’s recent partnerships with IC Wealth, Misika, Coronation and Flexi Pension as evidence, deals that give MoMo customers access to investment, credit and pension products rather than payments alone.
The comments come as MMFL builds out those product lines from a position of relative strength. The company completed its structural separation from MTN Ghana in June and reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of about GH¢1.7 billion, up 28.4 percent year on year, giving it room to expand beyond its core payments business into wealth and pension products it hopes will deepen customer relationships rather than just add transaction volume.
Other panellists pointed to the infrastructure and data behind that shift. Akosua Blay, chief business officer at the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems, said interoperability between banks, fintechs and mobile money operators has been central to the sector’s growth, while Jacqueline Dufie Mpare, managing director of Pan African Savings and Loans, said digital tools are helping lenders profile customers more accurately and make better credit decisions, particularly for small businesses.
MMFL is also preparing to launch a Fintech Lab intended to bring fintechs, developers and other ecosystem partners together to build digital finance products, part of a broader push the company has tied to shifting Ghana from a cash-based to a credit-based economy. The Ecobank-Joy Business dialogue’s first edition also covered banking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital payments more broadly.
