MobileMoney Fintech Ltd (MMFL) urged Bono Region traders and businesses to adopt mobile money at MoMoFest 2026, a two-day digital finance drive held in Berekum from September 4.
David Nana Addai, MMFL’s MoMo Channel Development Manager for Northern Ghana, told reporters on the sidelines of the event that mobile money has moved well past simple transfers into a platform covering payments, savings, credit and insurance. He said wider adoption could help small traders manage cash flow more easily and reduce their exposure to counterfeit notes, since digital transactions leave a traceable record that physical cash does not.
The Berekum stop is one leg of a longer push. MMFL, which began operating in 2009 with about 17,000 registered users, had grown to roughly 17.2 million users by 2024, while industry-wide mobile money transaction values rose from GH¢2.7 billion in 2013 to about GH¢1.07 trillion in 2024. The company has said its “Do More with MoMo” campaign for 2026 will carry the same activation format beyond Berekum to other major cultural events, including the Asogli Festival, ShattaFest, Rapperholic and Made in Tadi.
Alongside the Berekum event, MMFL launched a three-week activation in the municipality focused on onboarding customers to the MoMo App, encouraging merchants to accept digital payments and running fraud-awareness sessions. Addai said scam tactics keep changing, and he urged customers to protect their PINs, confirm transaction details before approving them and ignore unsolicited calls or messages asking for account access. “Customers’ safety remains central and paramount,” he said.
That fraud-prevention message sits inside a bigger company effort. MMFL has said it is working with the Cyber Security Authority, the Bank of Ghana, the police, banks and other telecom operators to share intelligence on emerging scams, and has built a framework called Uniting Against Digital Fraud, along with support for an industry command centre intended to coordinate real-time fraud detection across the financial sector.
The Berekum weekend combined the fraud-education push with entertainment, featuring musician Kweku Smoke and other artistes at a free concert, alongside a cashless market and merchant demonstrations. The 2026 edition of MoMoFest is backed by Ecobank Ghana PLC, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited, Ayo Ghana and MTN Business.
