The UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) on Wednesday said the ongoing electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) should be concluded within constitutional timeline.

“At the UN level, it is clear that elections are supposed to be held within the constitutional timeline,” said Charles Antoine Bambara, MONUSCO’s director of public information.

Bambara said there is need to hold dialogue that will come up with a roadmap to be followed in the coming days.

“I believe that is crucial. And if the dialogue is organized, DR Congo political leaders should agree. It is only after agreeing that we, at the international level, will be able to see which role to play,” the UN official said.

According to him, the necessity for dialogue was debated and placed on the table by the authorities, with some other political actors on the ground.

Bambara said MONUSCO will continue backing the dialogue initiative.

“Maybe this roadmap will help to determine what will be done and within what time frame. But at the moment we continue to insist that the constitutional timeline should be respected,” Bambara insisted. Enditem
