Ghanaian Afrobeat and highlife artiste Muzic Mensah has been selected for Boomplay’s inaugural NEXT WAVE programme, joining 18 emerging African talents chosen from applications submitted across the continent.
Boomplay had initially planned to select 15 artistes for the programme but expanded the cohort to 18 after what the platform described as an exceptionally strong pool of applicants from different African markets. Mensah is one of five Ghanaians in the lineup, alongside Mifa Grey, Itz Mr Roy, Goddy Wan and Hi Priest. The platform said selections were based on passion, creativity and originality, with the final group reflecting the diversity of emerging talent across the continent.
The recognition builds on a breakout year for Mensah, born Lawrence Mensah, whose single “Ankwanoma” has crossed 470,000 combined streams across Boomplay, Apple Music, Spotify, Audiomack and YouTube, with more than 400,000 of those coming from Boomplay alone, where the track peaked at number 15 on the platform’s Top 100 chart. The song also secured a Top 10 mid-year ranking in Ghana and a Top 20 mid-year ranking in Nigeria, and has picked up nominations at both the Ghana Music Awards USA and Ghana Music Awards Europe.
The NEXT WAVE placement gives Mensah another platform to extend his reach beyond Ghana as Boomplay begins rolling out promotional support for the 18 selected artistes across its African markets.
