Cable maker Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana has told power utilities and miners that better grid monitoring, not just better cables, is needed to cut failures on Ghana’s electricity network.

The Tema-based company made the case at its first Grid Reliability Workshop, which brought together representatives from power generation, transmission and distribution companies and from the mining and industrial sectors. The theme was “Grid Reliability – The Shift from Products to End-to-End Solutions.”

Discussions covered cable systems, real-time monitoring, anti-theft technology and early fault detection, tools the company says can help operators spot problems before they cause outages and make better investment decisions.

Chief Executive Alexander Quarcoopome said the company, which has made cables in Ghana for nearly six decades, is moving beyond manufacturing to sell complete solutions. He said it aims to combine its knowledge of the local market with the global expertise of its French parent, Nexans, to help customers improve network performance and anticipate failures.

Moussa Kafal, the Nexans group’s Global Offer Grid Senior Manager, said operators need visibility of what is happening across their networks. “A more reliable grid starts with getting the fundamentals right,” he said. He argued that operators who detect problems early and use better data are better placed to protect equipment and keep power flowing.

The sessions focused on three steps: building networks correctly from the design stage, making the condition of equipment visible, and using that information to make timely decisions over each asset’s lifetime.

Mr Adofo, Director of Innovation and Strategic Business Management at the Electricity Company of Ghana, said improving reliability requires sustained cooperation across the power supply chain. He said forums like the workshop let operators share experience and examine technologies that could strengthen performance.

Product quality remains a concern for the industry. In January 2026, Quarcoopome raised the influx of counterfeit cables into Ghana with the Ghana Standards Authority and asked the regulator to help tackle it. Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana was established in 1968.
