Nissan launched its new Tekton SUV in Mumbai on July 9, positioning the India built model for export to 50 markets across the Middle East and Africa.

The compact SUV starts at 10.49 lakh rupees and rises to 18.59 lakh rupees, and is manufactured at Nissan’s Chennai plant in partnership with Renault under the automaker’s “One Car, One World” strategy. It shares its underlying platform with the Renault Duster and is the second model Nissan has introduced in India this year as part of a wider push the company calls Re:Nissan. Nissan said it plans to export more than 100,000 units annually across over 50 countries, with the Tekton joining the Gravite and Magnite as the vehicles carrying that strategy.

The Tekton comes with two turbocharged petrol engines, a 1.0 litre unit and a 1.3 litre unit producing up to 163 PS and 280 Nm of torque, paired with manual or dual clutch automatic transmissions. It includes Google built in connectivity, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats and a 700 litre boot. On safety, the SUV comes standard with six airbags and more than 17 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist.

Nissan Chief Performance Officer Guillaume Cartier said the launch reflected the company’s push to grow in India. “We are building a stronger and more competitive Nissan in India,” he said. AMIEO region chairperson Massimiliano Messina said the model was engineered in India specifically with export customers across Africa and the Middle East in mind, describing the country as a growth engine for the company’s wider SUV production.

Bookings for the Tekton are open at Nissan dealerships and online, with deliveries in India due to begin July 20. Nissan has not yet confirmed timelines or pricing for African markets.
