Andei deceived the driver and tried to make off with the motorcycle

A 23-year-old security guard, Kumbang Andei, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a motorcycle valued at N110,000, property of one Ben Okwudili.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Julius Babatope, said that Andei was standing trial on a one count-charge of stealing.

Babatope said that the accused, at about 1:50p.m. on July 5 around Lekki roundabout, hijacked the motorcycle by deceiving Okwudili.

Andei allegedly flagged down Okwudili at Adeola Odeku Street and asked to be taken to Jakande Bus Stop for a fare of N150.

The prosecutor said that along the way, the accused told the motorcyclist that he was not driving well and asked to be allowed to drive the bike, which Okwudili accepted after much pressure.

Babatope said that on getting to the Law School bus stop, Andei stopped and, instead of allowing Okwudili who had already stepped down to take over the motorcycle, rode off.

“It was then Okwudili raised an alarm and with the help of passersby, Andei was apprehended as he was held up by the traffic light at Sand Field bus stop,” he said.

Babatope said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, W. Balogun, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till August 1 for further hearing.
