Cape Town ? Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has decried levels of corruption in his country, saying Nigerians encouraged graft through their malpractices, a report said on Wednesday.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 54th annual conference of the Nigerian Economic Society in Abuja, Jonathan said both the public and private sectors were involved in corruption, but added he would not give out any names in case he was ?attacked?, Punch reported.
Jonathan said he envisaged a society where all Nigerians, and not only government, would fight for a graft-free nation, adding that until Nigerians are able to do this, the country wouldn?t get to where he wanted it to go.
Nigeria has over the years put in place institutional reforms aimed at fighting corrupt practices, but the country remains among the most corrupt nations in the region.
