Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is expected back in Ghana on Friday to formalise a contract extension, resolving a salary standoff that had threatened his continued tenure.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams disclosed the timeline while briefing Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and Sports on Ghana’s World Cup and Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaigns. He said Queiroz, 73, would meet him ahead of an official unveiling, with the extended contract to be formalised on arrival. Some of Queiroz’s backroom staff are already in the country as preparations begin for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

The extension follows weeks of uncertainty over money. Reports in August said talks had stalled after Queiroz, who earned $80,000 a month on his original World Cup contract, sought roughly $150,000 monthly along with additional foreign technical staff, prompting the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to explore alternatives including assistant coach Desmond Ofei. A fresh mandate was announced on September 3 after the GFA and the Ministry of Sports resolved outstanding payments from his first spell, though the financial terms of the new deal were not disclosed at the time.

Ghana’s World Cup run underpinned the decision to retain him. Queiroz led the Black Stars to a 1-0 win over Panama, a 0-0 draw with England and a 2-1 loss to Croatia in the group stage, enough to advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams to the Round of 32, where Ghana lost 1-0 to Colombia, the country’s first knockout-stage World Cup appearance since 2010.

Queiroz now turns to Ghana’s bid to qualify for the 2027 AFCON, after the Black Stars missed the 2025 tournament in Morocco, ending a long run of continental appearances and raising the stakes for a return. Ghana open Group C away to Ivory Coast at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24, before hosting the Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27; the group also includes Somalia.
