Francis Kaboneka, Rwanda minister of local government told local leaders on Friday converged at Rwanda Defence Forces Combat Training Centre in Gabiro, Nyagatare District in Eastern Rwanda for a retreat.
“Leaders and citizens should interact and collectively search for solutions to challenges they face and come up with solutions instead of lying back and wait for issues to accumulate,” he said.
He noted that local leaders are fond of not being serious in their work and resort to spend most of their days in towns instead of reaching to grassroots to attend to problems facing people they serve.
“We shall not tolerate such behaviour because people voted for u in power so you should serve them diligently in a more a transparent manner,” Kaboneka emphasized.
The 7-day meeting will focus on reviewing, and drawing actionable programmes to improve service delivery in the local government leadership.
The retreat will put much emphasis on key governance related issues such as transparency and accountability, anti-corruption mechanisms, savings culture, among others.
Rwanda has been on several occasions commended for its effort to promote democratic values and good governance practices.
Last month during the 12th National Leadership Retreat, Rwandan President Paul Kagame told leaders that it is their full responsibility to deliver on the set targets.
The Head of State warned leaders not to become complacent based on achievements such as the good business environment or the Millennium Development Goals, and tasked them to focus on make what they have achieved sustainable. Enditem
