Police say seven people are feared dead after becoming trapped at a reclaimed mining site near Asaman Tafo in the Atiwa East District, though officers have not yet detailed how the incident occurred.

No other details, including the exact time of the incident, the cause, or the identities of those trapped, had been made public at the time of writing. It was also not clear whether a rescue operation was under way or whether any survivors had been recovered.

Reclaimed mining sites, land previously mined and refilled or resurfaced, have been the scene of fatal collapses elsewhere in the district before. In April 2024, two illegal miners died at Darkokrom, also in Atiwa East, when a pit they were working in caved in during an excavation method known locally as “kolikoli.” That incident is separate from Thursday’s report and is cited here only as background on recurring ground-stability risks at old mining sites in the district.

This is a developing story. NewsGhana will update this report as police and district authorities release further details.
