A former American Idol contestant was shocked when his act of generosity, performing for free at an elementary school, was rewarded with a criminal act.
Season 9 American Idol finalist Todrick Hall performed for free at Hazard Elementary School in Santa Ana, California on Thursday. While posing for pictures with students, Hall briefly sat his iPhone and case down. It was during that brief period that Hall?s phone and case, which doubles as a wallet, were stolen by a student?s mom.
Bertha Avalos was charged with grand theft for taking Hall?s items. Avalos was nabbed at a local grocery store by Hall and a security guard, thanks to the ?Find my iPhone? app which Hall had installed on his phone.
?They see a kid from the school, they contact the student, they see his mother, the mother sees our victim and attempts to get away,? said Anthony Bertanga, a spokesperson with the Santa Ana Police Department.
Avalos eventually confessed and gave Hall back his wallet and phone. Hall called police after leaving the store.
?Well that?s bad for the kids first of all, second of all we received a phone call from the school just to let the parents know if you find something at the school, you know, you have to return it back,? parent Luis Mendoza told a local Fox affiliate.
