President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled a groundbreaking G20 taskforce Thursday aimed at tackling worldwide wealth inequality, marking the first time the group has formally addressed this mounting crisis.

The six-expert panel, led by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, will deliver recommendations to G20 leaders when they gather in Johannesburg this November. South Africa has leveraged its rotating presidency to spotlight challenges facing developing nations, from crushing debt loads to widening income gaps.

Ramaphosa described the initiative as targeting an issue that undermines human dignity and future prospects globally. He pointed to unequal vaccine access during COVID-19 as evidence of how disparities harm progress, warning that rising food and energy costs are creating “a new oligarchy in our global economy.”

The numbers paint a stark picture. World Inequality Report data shows the planet’s poorest half controls merely 2% of global wealth, while the richest tenth commands 76%. This concentration has intensified frustrations that Stiglitz believes can be channeled into concrete policy changes.

“Inequality was always a choice, and G20 nations have the power to choose a different path,” Stiglitz said, emphasizing the taskforce’s mission to convert public anger into workable solutions for world leaders.

The panel includes UNAIDS chief Winnie Byanyima and University of Massachusetts development economist Jayati Ghosh, bringing diverse expertise to address what Ramaphosa called the growing chasm “between the rich and the rest of the world.”

This initiative comes as South Africa prepares to hand the G20 presidency to the United States at year’s end. The group, originally created to coordinate financial policy after Asia’s 1990s crisis, expanded its scope during the 2008 global downturn.
