Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has directed sub-metropolitan assemblies in Accra to intensify their efforts to clear all structures on waterways in communities.

He also called on people to adopt a positive character towards sanitation to save the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) from spending its resources on waste control.
Dr Vanderpuije, who said this after inspecting some ongoing construction of drains in Accra, added that the perennial flooding the metropolis are mostly caused by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and water courses.
Some of the areas visited as part of the inspection tour were Korle Gonno and Shiabu pump stations, Chemu, Datus School area, Most Holy Heart at Dansoman, Accra Academy and Achimota/Apenkwa drains to acquaint himself with progress of work.
Dr Vanderpuije said poor sanitation practices are destroying the aesthetic beauty of the environment causing major discomforts to residents and investors.
He said: ?We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that all the drains are dredged for the storms not to take us by surprise.?
The MCE said about 45 per cent of the main sewerage lines around Dansoman, Korle Bu, Burma Camp and Labone areas have been completed and AMA is working hard to eliminate the Lavender Hill by the end of this year.
Mr Graham Sarbah, Director of Drains Unit of the AMA who took the MCE round, said: ?Drains are not meant for garbage; therefore, it is the responsibility of all individuals to maintain a high standard of sanitation and hygiene.?
