The response of residents in the Sunyani Municipality to the National Sanitation Exercise on Saturday was not encouraging.

This was because only a handful of people were seen in the central business district of the Sunyani township clearing choked gutters and sweeping the streets.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency?s (GNA?s), some of the participants said the low turn-out indicates the lack of awareness about the National Sanitation Day by the populace, because most people claimed they did not know anything about it.
Notwithstanding the Ministerial directive that everybody should be involved, most taxi drivers in the town were busily going about their normal businesses whilst the market women and hawkers were also seriously engaged in their trading activities.
The disappointing response by residents compelled the undaunted few participants to forcefully stop taxi cabs to join in the exercise
Mr Joe Mensah, an artisan and a participant told the GNA that the behaviour of residents in the municipality towards the clean-up exercise was enough to say that most Ghanaians preferred application of force to such national calls.
Mr. Mensah, aged 56, did not understand why the exercise, which would affect the health of Ghanaians, was poorly patronized, and urged everyone to take part in the next exercise.
