Sunyani to host NAFAC-2014


The Northern Regional Department of Arts and Culture has started vigorous preparation towards participating in this year?s National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC-2014) to be hosted in Sunyani from November 28 to December 2.

NAFACAs part of the Region’s preparation, 26 dancing groups from all the districts in the region took turns to perform traditional dances as they engaged and challenged one another at the Tamale Jubilee Park.

Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, the Northern Regional Minister, said the government was ready to welcome proposals from private organisations to help tap arts, culture and tourism potentials to develop the sector.

He said the rich cultural heritage of supporting one another, of self-reliance and understanding were what the poeple thrived on and must be jealously guarded, maintained and preserved.

?I will equally not hesitate to encourage traditional leaders to do away with customs and practices that degrade human-hood that offend our sensibility?, he said.

The Minister said aside using NAFAC to integrate arts and culture for national unity, it sought to use the opportunity to discuss and find solutions to socio-economic challenges.

Madam Georgina Tumbakur, Deputy Director of Administration at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, urged parents to support and encourage children who are gifted in creative arts to pursue it to the higher levels.

?It is not only the sciences, engineering, technology profession that pay as we perceive but professions in the creative arts industry are very rewarding?, she said.

NAFAC was institutionalized in 1961 by the late Dr. Alexander Atta Yaw Kyerematen, the founder and the first Director of the Ghana National Cultural Centre now the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi.
