Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday suspended the country’s public prosecutor and instituted a tribunal to inquire into his alleged misconduct and acts of impropriety.

The Zambian leader has since appointed a four-man tribunal to inquire into alleged misconduct and acts of impropriety of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mutembo Nchito. “The Tribunal has been tasked with 8 terms of reference that include the probing of the alleged acts of impropriety by the DPP as alleged by members of the public,” a statement released by presidential spokesperson Amos Chanda said.
The statement added that the tribunal has also been tasked to recommend whether the DPP should be removed from office as a result of the allegations.
Last month, the police briefly arrested and detained the public prosecutor after a lower court issued a warrant of arrest against him and charged him with nine offenses.
He was however released after a high court ruled that the lower court misdirected itself by issuing the warrant of arrest.
Among the offenses he was charged with included two counts of abuse of office, two counts of contempt of court, procuring execution of documents by false pretense and uttering false documents.
The public prosecutor’s arrest followed complaints raised by a former minister over his conduct. Enditem
