Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) spokesman Colonel David Obonyo on Monday said the soldiers were on patrol when the incident took place.

He said the IED was suspected to be planted by Somalia-based Al-Shabaab militants.

The injured had been taken to Nairobi for medical attention, Obonyo said.

According to the military, such device was found in an Al-Shabaab camp that had been abandoned by the militants fleeing the vast Boni forest due to the ongoing army operation in the region.

Obonyo said bomb experts had been sent to the area to tackle unexploded bombs.

He said the army operation had been “very successful” in flushing out the militants from the forest that had been used as a hideout for recruitment and training of Kenyan fighters.

The Kenyan government has increased operations to reduce Al-Shabaab threats for the coming festive season. Enditem
