The suspect, 40-year-old Naana Amenenah, is believed to be mentally unstable.
She is suspected to have mixed a poisonous substance with a beverage, which was consumed by her two children aged 6 and 7. They were believed to have died in their sleep.
A sister of the woman, Naana Esia, who confirmed the incident said prior to the death of the children, nothing indicated that her sister was mentally unstable.
She said the sister took good care of her children and made sure the kids were always clean and good-looking. According to her, the sister was very particular about education of the children and made sure they always attended school regularly.
She said the whole community is in a state of mourning, as they woke up to the sad incident.
“It was just yesterday [that] I spoke with the children, who told me they were 6 and 7. They said their father is a teacher and they met with him yesterday. The kids said they were in a very good relationship with their mum.
They told me their mum always teaches them before they go to school, so they are very sharp and neat. We heard the woman is mentally challenged, but nothing really showed for us to suspect that she had such a condition,” Naana Esia disclosed in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM.
Meanwhile, Police in the Western Region have begun investigations to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the children. The bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi.
