Six Eritreans and a Kenyan were killed on the spot in a head-on collision in Uganda’s eastern district of Tororo on Sunday, police said.
Charlotte Ndyahabwe, Tororo district traffic officer, told Xinhua on the phone that the fatal accident occurred after a Toyota Wish collided with a trailer at Ndaiga swamp along the Tororo-Kampala Highway.
The victims were traveling in the Toyota Wish from Kenya to Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
“The driver of the Toyota Wish was overspeeding. He was trying to overtake a trailer and didn’t see another trailer coming from the opposite side. It was caught in the middle,” said Ndyahabwe.
The traffic officer said the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Tororo Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Police attribute a high rate of road accidents in Uganda to reckless driving, overspeeding, human error, drunk driving and overloading.
Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest traffic death rates, according to police statistics. Enditem
