The 27th Summit of the Heads of State and Governments of the African Union (AU) was held in Kigali, Rwanda from 17th to 18th July 2016 under the theme- “2016: Year of Human Rights with particular focus on the Rights of Women”.

It is imperative that this passport is put at the disposal of those who need it the most i.e. the citizenry with all the necessary measures to mitigate any stumbling block to its effectiveness notably corruption and harassment at the entering borders by security agents.
Africa cannot be said to be independent if its countries are dependent on their former colonial masters and institutions like the World Bank and the IMF for resources and directives for their developmental needs. The time is long overdue for the continent to take command of its developmental objectives. It is therefore heartwarming that AU took the important decision to fund its own activities.
Though AASU appreciates these decisions, we believe that the most important and far reaching advancement for the continent would have been the setting up of the following pan-African Ministries: Foreign Affairs, Defense and Food/Agriculture. Therefore the time has come for bold decisions to be taken regardless of the stand of our former colonial masters. All these are possible if African leaders eschew their personal interests and consider the general interests of their people as their number one concern.
AASU welcomes the decision of the Kingdom of Morocco to come to the African Union without any precondition to play its rightful role in the developmental efforts of our continent.
Long live African Unity!
Awaah Fred
(Secretary General)
