Academic work at the Tema Community Eight No 3 and 4 Basic Schools came to a halt due to rains as almost all the classrooms leak profusely.

Teachers and pupils had to rearrange desks to prevent pupils from getting drenched with rainwater while in the classrooms.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a tour observed that buckets were placed in classrooms to collect rainwater from the leaking roofs in the classrooms. The pupils sat very close to each other in a bid to avoid contact with the water.

Some pupils were also tasked by their teachers to sweep the rainwater from their verandas to avoid slips and other accidents.

The school building, just like others in the Tema Metropolis needs urgent renovations as pupils say it was a regular occurrence that truncates teaching and learning whenever it rained due to the deplorable state of the school structure.

The structures, which were part of schools constructed by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah as part of the creation of a planned city in Tema have their roofing rotten, visible cracks in concretes, with classrooms left dark because of designed blocks rather than windows have been used rather than windows for ventilation.

Meanwhile, Mr Yohane Amarh Ashitey, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, who was at the premises of the school for a tree planting exercise when it started to rain, inspected the leakages and other structural issues.

Mr Ashitey acknowledged that the school needed urgent attention and gave the assurance that immediately, the Tema Metropolitan Engineer would be tasked to do proper assessment of the issue after which steps would be taken to replace the leaking roofs.

He said to ensure that the school still operates, works would be done in stages explaining that they would have to combine some classes to enable them to work on the structure one after the other.
