The Achimota Golf Course has assumed an international stature following a 3million dollars renovation funded by giant oil exploration firm, Tullow Ghana Limited.

Achimota Golf Course The one-year overhaul that cost Tullow Ghana estimated 3 million dollars qualifies the Achimota course to host PGA tournaments.

Paul Kelly, Grow-in Manager at Paul McGinley Golf Design Africa, constructors of the course told the media that the upgrade brings Ghana to the league of internationally recognized courses in South Africa and Kenya and the first in West Africa.
Kelly said the new course which covers approximately eight kilometers had 18 holes, each consisting of a fairway, rough and other hazards and a teeing ground.
?All the tee boxes are built to US Golfers Association (USGA) standards. We also used riviera grass from Spain and some other types of grass to give the course an international feel.
The grass we chose was also of the warm season nature, meaning they are more favourable to the sunlight. Those are the conditions in Africa so we had to use a grass that was drought-tolerant and capable of thriving in sunlight.?
With annual maintenance of the course projected at one million cedis, the Achimota Golf Club, according to tournament organizer, Kwaku Amoafo Yeboah plan hosting high profile events to recoup investment and maintain standards.

?I think that this new course has been long in coming. It is good for Ghana and we needed something that had an international appeal and I think we have one now. We hope to attract some attention from the international golfing fraternity.?
He said ?I do not want to spill the beans now but with this upgrade, we are much placed to organize competitive tournaments and by so doing also attract potential investor?.
Bernice Natue, head of Communications and Investment at Tullow Ghana said that ?The sponsorship is strictly in line with our social responsibility programme and for some time now Tullow has decided to help in the development of sports in the country.?
