The man fingered for scuttling the presidential ambitions of the charismatic founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has been arrested by the Police for allegedly engaging in corrupt activities with a political party.
Kofi Asomani, the Director of Elections and Asante Kissi, Director of Elections in charge of Logistics at the Electoral Commission were arrested on Monday afternoon for demanding or receiving a bribe of Ghc1,600 from the founder of the New Vision Party (NVP), Prophet Daniel Nkansah to facilitate his participation in the December 7 poll.
Director of Police Public Relations, DSP Cephas Arthur confirmed the arrest to Adom News. They are currently on police enquiry bail with one surety to report to the police Tuesday morning.
Speaking on Adom FM?s Dwaso Nsem morning show a day after her nomination papers were rejected by the EC on October 18, 2012, Madam Akua Donkor singled out Mr Asomani as the man who singularly stood against her candidature, perhaps in connivance with the NDC, who she accused of colluding with the EC to disbar those they view as threatening.
She said after securing the required Payment Order made out to the Electoral Commission worth Ghc10,000 from the Kumasi main branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank, order number 0009015960504, from ?Honourable Akua Donkor,? Mr Asomani, after taking a cursory look at the Order, declined to accept it for ?reasons best known to him.?
?I gave it to Asomani but he said he won?t take it. I said he should keep it so I go and correct the things that he says are wrong but he said no,? she lamented.
Speaking earlier on Monday October 22, Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tettey said the two EC officials were allegedly offered GH1,600 by the party to facilitate their participation in the poll.
However, DSP Freeman Tettey indicated that the two were arrested while in the process of refunding the money after the NVP was not cleared on Thursday to participate in the December polls.
They were arrested together with the General Secretary of the party Mr Daniel Nkansah Jnr and a taxi driver, one Sarpong, who was conveying the money.
The police are currently pursuing the founder and leader of the party, Prophet Daniel Nkansah, whom they suspect might have played a key role in the bribery allegation.
?At the moment we are actually on the tail of Prophet Nkansah, he has a question to answer; he needs to assist the police to continue investigations into the matter. This is a serious matter that must be dealt with thoroughly,” DSP Freeman Tetteh said.
The suspects would be arraigned when the police complete their investigations, Mr Tettey said.
Coming on the heels of the already tensed political terrain, political analysts are keeping a close eye on alleged corrupt practices of two of the main actors in the epic December 7 general elections.
