Al-Shabaab captures coastal city in S. Somalia – official

Al-Shabaab militants on Friday took over the coastal city of Marka after AMISOM and government forces vacated the town without fighting, officials and witnesses said.

Lower Shabelle region Mayor Ibrahim Adan Ali told media that AMISOM and Somali government troops withdrew from the city.

“AMISOM and Somalia National Army pullet out the town. Militants entered Marka without any clashes,” the mayor confirmed.

Witnesses said they have seen heavily armed African troops getting out of the town without knowing their destination, while Al-Shabaab fighters entered the city

“The African peacekeeping force moved out of Marka and we saw tanks moving out of the town and we don’t know where they went,” Abdifitah Isaq, Marka resident, told Xinhua, adding the Al-Shabaab fighters stormed the police headquarters in the city, where their flag fluttering above the place.

The strategic town of Marka about 110 Km southern of Mogadishu is the capital of Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia. AMISOM and Somalia forces seized the town 3 years ago, pushing the militants out of the town. Enditem
